In five steps to food and feed safe algae

Microalgae are a solution to the food gap. However, the large-scale production of microalgae involves four challenges: price, quality, sustainability and volume. Phycom’s biotech system is modular, which makes it scalable. It is circular where possible, and hence sustainable. And also completely closed, guaranteeing the quality of the microalgae produced. Phycom’s food and feed safety management system is FSSC22000 and GMP+ certified.

1

Selection and axenity check

Phycom selects the best algae strains and makes the culture axenic. Only then can the microalgae be used for production. The culture is pure and completely free of all contaminants. Bacteria and other contaminating organisms can attach to algae and grow in parallel with them. Phycom has developed techniques to eliminate these unwanted organisms.

NEXT STEP

Production

After step 1 is complete, the production of biomass begins. The algae are grown in a completely closed system so that the growth can be fully controlled from start to finish.

NEXT STEP

Algae harvest

Phycom harvests the microalgae. The water is separated from the algae, producing a yoghurt-like paste.

NEXT STEP

Algae drying

Immediately after harvesting, Phycom processes the algae paste. This is usually done by drying. The drying temperature and rate have been optimised to preserve the high-quality nutrient profile of the microalgae.

NEXT STEP

Algae grinding

Phycom grinds the dried algae into a fine powder. Light-proof, airtight packaging is used to preserve the fresh green colour.

The benefits of Phycom

APPLICATIONS

Phycom works closely with industry to identify innovative product applications where the functional and nutritional properties of microalgae come into their own.

RELIABILITY

Phycom’s fully closed production system with strict process controls results in microalgae with superior purity and consistent quality. Phycom is FSSC22000 and GMP+ certified.

FLEXIBILITY

Phycom has one of the largest microalgae production facilities in Europe, enabling it to deliver quickly and in different compositions and product forms.

ECONOMIES OF SCALE

Phycom makes large-scale production of microalgae possible. This offers economic benefits and a very high delivery reliability of the microalgae.
